The new five-storey building of the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule Düsseldorf houses the university library, seminar rooms, administrative offices and over 50 heavily frequented practice rooms for students.

The building signage concept we developed here aims to direct visitor and user flow and bring them to their respective destinations within the building in a time-effective way.

We developed a colour coding system that differentiates between usage areas and makes them recognisable.

Two musical annotation symbols were chosen as minimalist design elements to indicate direction:

The crescendo (or decrescendo) arrow for left and right. It indicates the dynamics (volume change) in musical notation. The crescendo (or decrescendo) arrows extend – analogous to the musical notation – horizontally over the name of the room whose direction is shown.
